Affiliate History
As with most CrossFit affiliates it all starts with one person finding CrossFit. After recently ending a phd program and many years of unfitness Greg was completely uninterested in sports or fitness. But this all started to turn around when his wife Teresa prevailed upon him to start some weight training at the small fitness studio where she worked part time. While only doing “bench press” and “preacher curls,” Greg knew he was on the right path. Shortly afterward Greg discovered Mark Rippetoe’s “Starting Strength.” Impressed with Rippetoe’s no nonsense style, wit, and intelligence, Greg did some research and learned Rip was teaching the CrossFit Basic Barbell certification course in Orlando in August of 2008. Deciding to attend this certification course began Greg’s CrossFit journey. After following Rip’s training program in his garage for 3 months, Greg’s desire to do more than weight training increased and he again looked for a CrossFit affiliate in Tallahassee. While there was a gym in Tallahassee that advertised they were an affiliate they did not in fact do CrossFit. After much thought Greg decided to get his CrossFit Level 1 certificate and affiliate. He reasoned that if it did not work at least he would have a really well equipped home gym. Tallahassee deserved to have a top notch CrossFit affiliate and Greg were ready to deliver.
CrossFit Tallahassee was born on January 5th 2009 in our garage. At first it was just a few people but in a couple of months it was obvious the garage was not going to be big enough. After a particularly loud Diane workout that upset the neighbors the move was made into a 1,500 square foot facility off of Centerville road in Tallahassee. The next year the wall came down and it expanded to 3,000 square feet. More and more people became aware of CrossFit and CrossFit Tallahassee got even bigger. The next step was a new facility. This new facility is the current home of what we now call CFTally.
